First Things First

You know the old adage, never grocery shop when hungry? Yeah, well I did. We were supposed to go out for dinner tonight, but if I don't cook everything I bought, it'll go to waste. I guess we're having dinner in and apparently, some items will be stuffed. Like the peppers. No dish speaks summer to me like my Grannie's bread and cheddar cheese stuffed peppers.

Keeping with a red theme, there will be cherry pie for dessert. Achatz cherry pie to be exact. I feel sorry for those of you who don't live in Michigan with direct access to Achatz pies. You don't know what you're missing, but hey, if you want to know what they're like, you can order one here. I can vouch for all the flavors, but it's the cherry and Michigan 4 berry pie I can't pass up. Other pies are clearly pedestrian in comparison. They're expensive, but oh so worth the price of admission. A word to the wise: hide it! Don't share. In fact, when it gets to you, eat it all first--even before dinner. No sense in risking that you won't live long enough to get to dessert.

It's warm and humid in Detroit today with plenty of cloud cover to soften the blow of the heat. Every once in awhile I see a peek of the sun and tomorrow, there's a little of that in the forecast. It's a good day to knit, though the heavy and colorful shawl will have to wait for cooler temps. It's a hot one to have in the lap. Not knowing which unfinished project I should devote a little attention to, I got out the books, bought a little yarn and cast on for a baby gift. A crib sized Log Cabin blankie is in the works for my very pregnant friend who is due in October. I don't know what she's having, so I stuck with genderless colors in cream, sage, blue, gray and charcoal. Since I hate knitting cotton, Silky Wool will have to do.

Poor little babe.

Hey! Have a great weekend. I'm off to eat that dessert.

yes. by all means eat dessert first. i mean what if you had a big ole' heart attack or something and the pie just sat there uncut while you digested green beans. krap. that would be sinful!

Those peppers looks delicious. That pie wouldn't last five minutes here

Wish I were at your house tonight. Instead, I'm chaperoning an 8th grade dance. Not sure which particular circle of hell it is or why I deserve to be there but. .. . oh yeah, it's cause I get summers off! Would love the recipe for the stuffed peppers, although I don't think I'll be firing up the oven anytime soon; can't get the inside temperature below 78 as it is! So hot

Rose, I'll send you Grannie's recipe. Lucky for you, they're cooked on the stovetop. No oven required! Have fun at the dance...bwahahahahahaha... I'm spending the evening with Kay, Ann and a little yarn.

I have never heard of a pie that costs that much. WOW. A sheet cake costs that much and they aren't very tasty though, so I believe you when you say they are really special. The peppers, pie and yarn all look yummy! That will be one special blankie.

Brenda, locally the pies cost half that online price, but they are that special.

Dessert should always be first! Who made those rules anyway?

Oh yes! That pie looks scrumptious. Did you make it or buy it? I'm not too good at pie making. I do one a year for my sweetheart's birthday in August--blackberry. But that's it for me.

I want some of that pie right now!

I've never eaten stuffed peppers.

My knitting is languishing. If I ever have a paycheck again, I'd like to take knitting classes. I think I need to be shown (and shown again).

Rudee, your pie is a hit! And that red is power packed! I think you should prepare and freeze- and never miss going out for dinner because you don't want food to go to waste. Life is too short!

I think I'll stick with the peppers. Those pies look delish but the cost with shipping would be horrendous. Maybe they couldn't get across the border, either. I'll have to come to Michigan where they're half-price!

LOVE the Cougar Man and ordered some pie. We are Pie People! Still compare all newcomers to a mixed berry pie from a roadside stand in Delaware. That is from when groovin' was groovin'...:>)
Any tornadoes your way? CollegeGrrrl is up at the lake-heard 7 tornadoes touched down west of there.

I'd love that stuffed peppers recipe. And I have a great one from a friend for a tart cherry/blueberry pie with a crumble topping.

Have you done the scribble scarf from that book? Oh, so fast and easy and just gorgeous.

We miss our closeness to the Door County (WI) cherries. And what a beautiful pie. Definitely eat some first and leave a little room for dinner.

I'm coveting that stash of Silky Wool. Gorgeous!

Cherry Pie -sounds decadant. We grow very few cherrys here and cannot import many due to quarantine laws so they are rae and expensive a pie would be so decadent.
Lucky baby with the blankie.
