Listen to me, because I don't.

Prescience [ˈprɛsɪəns]
noun

knowledge of events before they take place; foreknowledge

It's not like I see or speak to the dead, but I just know when something bad is going to happen. It's like the hairs on the back of my neck stick up and I get a feeling deep in my gut.

Even before I went to the market yesterday to get fixings for today's dinner, I had a thought that PF Chang's carryout would be nice. Did I listen? No.

This afternoon, I had a fleeting thought about my cooking tools, but the message wasn't so clear, or I'd have listened to the voice in my head that told me, gee, it's been awhile since you sharpened that knife. That was all of 20 seconds before the knife blade met the parsley, and inadvertently, my thumb.

And just as I ignored the voice that warned of the dull knife, I am ignoring the certain knowledge that 2, or more likely 3 to 4 stitches are in order. I just can't spend my night off at urgent care having the tip of my thumb sewn back on. I finally found steri-strips and a bandage that's got enough padding to keep me from bumping the stupid thing and making it bleed all over again. It is a bit clumsy, but I'm workin' it. No?

Thanks to my kids, I have plenty of analgesics in the house.

Note to self: please arrange carryout for next Mother's Day.

See, I listened to that voice, got my knives sharpened, and promptly lost the tip of my little finger. Que sera, sera.

Hard to knit without the thumb...

A dull knife hurts so much more than a sharp one.

Oh, no! Not a good way to spend Mother's day. Hope you have a speedy recovery.

After saying I'm sorry about your thumb injury, I would like to point out that MY mishap today, which resulted in injury to my left knee, has resulted in a bigger bandage than the bandage on your thumb.

She who has the bigger bandage wins. Wins what? Hell, I don't know. I was the youngest child in my family--I like to win when I can.

And I bet I bled more, too.

Yes, Ari, but did it bleed for 3 hours? I did watch it to make sure blood wasn't spraying. No arteries were damaged in the "knife incident".

Mine is still bleeding.

:-)

Well, Ari, I think if I squeezed my thumb, I could probably make it bleed, but sadly, there is not enough beer in the house to get me to do that.

That is a very nice-looking knife. I gave my sister one like that for a present. You could say a liking for knives runs in our family (see my Post about my mom, for mother's day). Im sorry you cut your finger. That's a bummer! Make sure you take something to manage the pain, OK? By the way, that 'son of Lexapro' I referred to? Its called Cymbalta. Maybe you already know that. (Nurses know everything. No, Im not kidding.) xxoo

There should be a special section of Hallmark cards for the "Oh, and by the way--Happy Damn Mother's Day!!" greetings. Hope you heal soon, my friend. Thumbs are important. Allow us to write down all those verbal orders...

I'm trying to imagine knitting with that big bandage - and the pain - and it's not working for me. So, more power to ya for makin' it work.

I remember having a raccoon attached to my finger which was punctured like a juice can. Probably should have done a lot of things differently (like go to ER) but I did survive - with no scars.

Good you had liquid pain-killers on hand.

Ouch!! I'm glad you still have that digit.

Ouch! Not a good move, but I love that your kids have made sure that you always have pain relief in the house. ;-)

ya gotta start listening to yourself.

Size of the bandage is impressive. Hope it heals quickly and thoroughly.

Ooooooooh Ruth and I had the same idea. Hope it doesn't start bleeding and get all over your knitting. Yep the anesthetics sure look good.

Funny about that little tiny voice in the head, isn't it. How we wish we'd listened in time. I remember picking up an exacto knife to open a cardboard box thinking, "I shouldn't really be doing this," but proceeding and slicing two inches into the thumb pad thing on the palm. I think I had about 12 stiches on that one and was lucky not to cut the tendon. Now I pay more attention. Anyway, Rudee, I hope your thumb heals quickly.

May I suggest the Lebanese Grill by Lakeside. Wonderful, Shish Tawook, Fatoush and Hummus.

Dang, Rudee. What a stroke of bad luck! I'm sure you took care of the situation, and here's hoping there is no numbness. A numb thumb is such a bother!

I once sliced my finger immediately after thinking, "It's probably not a good idea to cut this like that." Not listening to ourselves is a common fault.

Always listen to that little voice inside, it is usually right. I'm so sorry about your thumb, I'm not convinced you didn't need stitches and maybe some antibiotics. However, the nurses I know are the ones that are the most stubborn about going to Urgent Care or the ER.

So glad it didn't get in the way of your knitting and the Oberon Ale helped numb the pain.

Take Care of yourself!
