The Dark Side

One pound of Black Plum Merino roving

Working the afternoon shift, I can't help but notice the sun setting a little bit earlier each day. A month ago, I was still making visits in broad daylight at 9 PM. I have appreciation for that because even with a GPS device, some addresses can be a challenge to find at night, especially in the city of Detroit where street signs routinely go missing.

One half pound of Corriedale/Shetland blend

There are other signs that although summer just began here a week ago, autumn is close at hand, like the crickets that are making quite a frenzied racket at night--as though they must be heard before the first frost. When watering the garden on Friday, I noticed some of the leaves on the Japanese maple were already bright red. The yellow jackets seem to be in a hurry, too. Or maybe they're just busy looking for new digs since Bill the Bug Killer wiped out their nest on my front porch.

One half pound of skirted alpaca

The surest sign of all that autumn is at hand is the color of yarn I'm buying. Sure, the fiber festival vendors had lots of beautiful, bright and summery offerings, but I was drawn to the darker colors. The colors of winter and the promise of many long days spinning and knitting for warmth.

My friend Sarah who went with me, was sticking to a theme of colors for her Etsy shop. A collection, so to speak. I guess I inadvertently did the same. With the exception of the blue Merino/Tencel blend, I bought a matching set. There was no intention to buy colors that go together, but this is what spoke to me while I was looking. I like to think I'll look at the blue yarn in the depths of winter and dream of the Carribean or the beauty of a bright winter sky after a snowfall. If you want to see what it's looking like all spun up, go take a look on my spinning blog.

Now this I didn't buy. Sarah gave me this. She is a budding indie-dyer and I think she's doing some amazing work. She wants me to spin it up to see how I like it. It's so pretty, I almost hate to unbraid the roving, but if I must...

Your yarn(roving?) looks lovely; I always like the darker Noro colors too. Also, I noticed the slant of light looked different this morning; you can definitely see fall around the corner, even if it does get in the 90's during the day around here.

I notice the darker mornings, I'm having to put the light on in the kitchen when I get up. Mind you, if I got up at a decent time, it would still be light! I love the autumn colours

I don't know the word roving related to yard. Those are some yummy colors. They do look snugly and warm.
Hot cocoa and a hot fire and someone to snuggle with. Can't beat that.

Hello Rudee, I had just noticed that the sun had set at 8.00pm unlike at 9.30pm a couple of weeks ago! Woah, time is moving quicker than i can keep up! I have started noticing the leaves too! Weee! I love this time of year! I love your darker colours. I love your knitting, I have just bought a pair of needles, no wool yet, would be helpful though! haha! It is also getting a wee bit nippy and cold in the night time! Brr! Bring on the gloves and scarf! Hope you are well!

Those colours are lovely. I've noticed the nights cutting in too. Dark by 9 o'clock now and it's not very light when the dratted moggie cries to be let out at 5 o'clock in the morning either.

After the middle of August things begin to change. There's a sense of holding one's breath during the last days of summer. Good for you to look ahead to dark shades. But I also love the turquoise of the last photo.

Which one will be that gorgeous sweater? I love those darker colors...even if they are winter-y. I think that the sun's warmth has an undercurrent of coolness after mid-August. No matter how warm it gets we'll never get that July heat back.

The richness and warmth of the colors is wonderful, rudee----even if it is getting to the end of summer.

well, we were at 92 today with 98 heat index, so it's still pretty hot and july-like, around here. But the days are definately getting shorter. Bummer!

The dark colored yarn is lovely, although I am not a lover of dark colored sweaters. I like pink and blue and orange sweaters even in the winter.

That braided yarn is lovely.

Yikes, thunder! See ya later.

I checked out your friends etsy. Looks like she has some really nice items. I also like the new look of your blog.
I have been too busy to notice the shorter days....

I've noticed the angle of the sun is a bit different now and by middle of September that is when I really "feel" and see the difference in the lighting in the yard. But our weather has been fantastically perfect for So Cal in August. I even have to wear a light jacket in the mornings because of the chill.

We're a long way from autumn relief here in "hell", I mean Phoenix.. Going down today to 104..
Beautiful yarn! I wish I could buy something that beautiful and be assured it wouldn't sit alone and forgotten in my closet.
