Heidi

Do you recall the movie, Heidi, with, Shirley Temple? It was one of my favorite all time movies and one I keep reminding myself needs to be added to my DVD library. I recall how my dad used to get tearful when the grandfather could not find his sweet Heidi. Dad was a sucker for movies like this. I'm sure--in part--because of his love of that movie, he named his first Dachshund Heidi. When he would call her, he would echo the grandfather's plea for Heidi. Heidi! Accent and all.

Well today, there is another Heidi who is in trouble in the next town over from me and is in a fight for her life. It seems this Heidi, a doberman rescue who looks like Leo's twin sister, collided with a stranger on the street when he (suddenly) bent over to pet her. She became excited, lifted her head up and broke the dumb dude's nose. He complained to the police that the leashed and well trained dog attacked him and the police decided to press criminal charges. Even though this was an accidental head-butt (happens with Leo all the time), it's being prosecuted as a bite/attack. In order for the criminal aspect of the charges to be dropped, the city attorney has demanded that Heidi be euthanized or removed from her handler's home.

A petition drive has been started to save Heidi's life. She even has her own website. Proving how well connected our small planet is, many thousands of people from all over the world have weighed in on Heidi's plight and have petitioned to save her life.

Won't you consider joining and helping maintain justice for someone who can't do it for herself?

You can save Heidi here. It only takes a few seconds to sign the petition.

I hope Heidi's outcome is as sweet as the ending of the movie of the same name.

I think we should start a different petition regarding dumb dude, but that's for another post. Who pets a stranger's big dog completely uninvited? Surely he's a candidate for a Darwin Award.

Done! I had a friend post about this on Facebook last night (she rescues dobeys) & I'm ashamed to say that I didn't take the FIVE SECONDS that it took to sign the petition. Thanks for the reminder!

Do you wonder why we had to muzzle our gentle giant?

True story - when we first got Spot [remember - our dachshund] she got excited to see me and as I bent down she leapt up and knocked out my two front teeth. I am not kidding. I can imagine that poor Heidi probably almost knocked that dumbass out. Grrrr.

Will go sign now. And if I can figure out a way to link to my FB I know my friends will want to sign too.

I have signed. Knowing that he leaned over to pet her tells me he is a dumbass (excuse me)to start with! I approach a new dog totally different and have never had a problem even with "trouble" dogs.

I don't think phonicide is a crime here, yet...but assisting a human is...sadly, because there are some cases, I think it would be a blessing.

The Dandelions have been blooming and seeding all winter, despite the freezing frost...at least they are edible.

Have a fantastic weekend.

Dogs should not be punished because of stupid people! When I'm walking the girls I put them at a sit/stay when someone walks past us. Fortunately the strangers we have met on the trails seem to have manners and will ask if they can approach.

I love Heidi as well.

Done. How sad that people can't see the difference in what this idiot did and an attack.

I am keeping Heidi and her family in my prayers. I sighned the petition. Looks like almost 84,000 folks have sighned her petition.

As a former dobie owner, I know how kind and wonderful they are. I hope you will keep us informed about this beautiful dog

I like your Darwin Award theory; It seems to apply to the DA too.. I signed.. Hope it helps.. Our ALWAYS loving Collie; Barney: just bit my youngest during play.. Totally Ricky's Fault and Ricky was the first to admit it. Dogs get excited;
Animals are animals.. (brilliant) and people should realize that BEFORE doing something like bending over a dog, getting in her face and petting her.. Without asking the owner. I'm so sorry for Heidi.
