I'm Not Losing a Daughter...

Though it seems like only yesterday, 28 years ago, I gave birth to my first child. What a thrill she was to me. For the first time in my life, I experienced the meaning of unconditional love and that feeling has not left me.

Even though it doesn't seem possible that so much time has passed, my sweet girl is getting married and I'm gaining another son. I always wanted two sons, so this fits in perfectly with my plans.

I'm not exactly surprised by their announcement as it's been obvious for awhile that this was a journey that would take this particular path. I am surprised though that once they decided that this is what they want, they want it now.

Like in immediately.

Two weeks was the last I heard.

I also heard tonight that they want something small and very private.

There was even talk about going to the Justice of the Peace on a Tuesday, like Carrie and Big did in Sex and the City. Just like that. It's like they've been dancing around the topic and now that they've made up their minds, they're done waiting.

Remind me when I get carried away and start using coercion, that this is what they want and I'm there to honor their wishes. I think they have reasons for wanting things the way that they do, and under no circumstances will I channel MLTL and start dictating how they'll celebrate their new beginning.

However, I do think it's unrealistic for them to think I can find the perfect dress in two weeks, let alone lose ten pounds to fit into it. Lord knows I don't want to be like the woman in the Bluefly commercial that can't find a thing to wear in her closet and so goes naked to the party.

That would not be a pretty sight.

That is wonderful news Rudee! Congrats to Sarah and all of you. I am sure they have their reasons for not wanting to have a large wedding. Don't tell my husband....but I never really wanted one or ever had dreams of one. I think money spent on a honeymoon is more memorable. Weddings are pretty and fun for some people, but it just may not be their cup of tea. So many exciting things going on in your life right now! Wow....!

They will so appreciate being able to do things their way, and I hope they will be very happy.

How exciting for you and your family! 2 weeks, hmmm, have they been bit by the Valentines day bug? Congratulations!

Congratulations! She will love you even more for respecting their wishes as gracefully as you do. Nothing like a MLTL in one's life to teach us how NOT to behave, eh?

Kudos to all of you!! Our wedding was small---just immediate family in my sister's back yard--we wrote our vows and a judge/neighbor of my sister
did the ceremony. We wanted to go to the courthouse, too, but the backyard thing was really for the parents.
Exciting times--and many changes on the horizon. Onward!!

Congratulations, hey what good news. Don't despair, you'll find a dress and look spectacular. My sweetie and me lived together for 7 years when one evening we decided to get married. Two weeks later we were at City Hall doing the deed. I didn't have a church wedding the first time and certainly had no desire for it the second time around. Worked well for us...ciao

Some happy news for you! That's great! As previous commenters have pointed out, size doesn't matter with weddings. Except for the mom's hankie - that has to be enormous!

Congratulations on increasing the size of your 'official' family. Did I just hear the pitter-pat of tiny feet?

Not yet, CC. And no shotguns involved. LOL. They just want to make the way they already live official.

Congrats Rudee! I'm looking forward to hearing how things turn out. Perhaps you could throw them a HUGE party to celebrate once the papers are signed?!

Congratulations, a wedding. have fun finding a dres to wear. Our Sons wedding was unique - his lovely bride wore a red dress - that I made - he wore a top hat and shirt and pants it was so hot. We all had so much fun did everything ourselves except the food and had it at a rustic camp in the bush - it was very memorable and just what they wanted, it was named the butterfly/red/shotgun/ wedding. Hope Sarah's day turns out memorable.

Awesome! Congratulations! I know from watching "Say Yes to the Dress" when family gets involved in the wedding, it causes lot of resentment.

Oh congrats on gaining that new son!! And such a fast one.

Last November, I was busy getting my yard ready for a congratulations party for my son and his wife, who got married in October, just a small little private wedding and then we held a party at the house a month later. We worked in the yard every day for 4 weeks to get ready, that is why I wasn't on my blogs much.

Hope you have time to get that perfect dress.
