Again?

Completely out of coffee this morning, I walked to town to buy a pound of beans. On my way, I saw a train stopped a few blocks to my north as I crossed the tracks. I thought to myself that would have made a great photo if I'd only brought my camera. I blame the lack of caffeine for having no foresight. I stopped at the bookstore and maybe spent around a half hour there before walking home.

As I crossed the railroad tracks again, I looked to the north and saw that the earlier train was gone, but to the south, I could see thick black smoke billowing into the sky before snaking west.

Yet again, another environmental disaster is unfolding in the Detroit area. Last month, a fuel tanker was involved in an accident on one of Detroit's main freeways. Today, a chemical plant about 10 miles south of my home is engulfed in flames. The news is reporting that 5 million gallons of fuel, and God knows what other petroleum based products they store, may burn for the next 12 hours before exhausting its supply.

I ran home to grab my camera to take these photos. And yes, I stood in the middle of the tracks to catch these images.

ahh thanks for going back for that camera, I like the photos and darn sorry to read about the chemical explosion thing. We have a fire that is polluting our skies right now, a few cities over.

Talk of chemical explosions always takes me back to this incident that happened in my home town in the 70s:

They are good photos, Rudee. Did you get your coffee (very important)!

Must be a week for it. We had a recycling plant go up in flames Tuesday which was burning for over 24 hours. I feel so sorry for those that lived close enough to be affected

I sure hope your air clears soon.

It's nice that you can just walk to get coffee, etc, But that chemical plant fire is bad stuff! Sometimes, I think I miss city living, but other times I'm thankful that I don't live anywhere near a big city.

Good shots though, Rudee.

Guess you got out of the way in time. Wonder if the train was delayed due to the spill? I reckon I do remember the Bosa Nova. HH and I used to go dancing every Sat night for many years. Even after we had big kids. Then the kids got old enough to go with us and then their kids and now we are just too old. We sit in the garage and listen to 8 tracks.

That looks like a scary scene. Hope everyone was okay and no one hurt.

I'm amazed that in a country as advanced as America, there are st8ill level crossings in highly populated areas. I have to cross one every time I go to two, but then there's less than 100 people who live here.

Also, there's nearly always a train taking on grain from the silos about 100yds from the crossing, or a coal trail waiting for the extra diesels to push it up the hill, and for 6 years I've been saying that I should bring my camera! I've yet to get a shot.

I believe this is the third, who's counting. Two days ago another Chemical fire two miles from the same site; what a wonderful city....Detroit. Hey sis where is the countdown clock to VA...

There's always something going on in Detroit, you guys just can't catch a break. There was an industrial fire and explosion not far from here a week ago with some people being evacuated. It's also the first anniversary of a huge explosion at a propane storage facility in the north part of the city. If it's not a natural disaster, it's a man made one isn't it? After last week's tornadoes, I'm not sure which scares me more...ciao
