Gift Horse

Against my better judgment, I agreed to work the west side of town tonight until midnight.  I've been dreading my decision ever since.  About an hour ago, I got a phone call that they don't need me after all.

Woot!

Gift Horse
Not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I've simultaneously freed up my night, and found yet another reason to stay in my jammies even longer!  It's so exciting.

What will I do with all of this free time? Suddenly, I'm the recipient of a 4 day weekend off! I'd say go to the movies, but Sara and I did that yesterday when we went to see, Argo.  If you haven't seen it and you're looking for an escape from our bitter election season, go!  While it's ever so slightly political (barely so), and you may already know the outcome of this true story, and it serves up a modest dose of (sobering) foreign policy, it's a very well made movie.  I had no idea what had really transpired to get those half dozen Americans out of Tehran in 1979.  I'm sure the ending likely wasn't all that close as the picture seems to infer, it was exciting to watch.  I'm sure if Iranian officials see this movie, the politics of it all will still be pertinent to them.

Since last night, I've been walking around muttering, ARGOf**kyourself.  Mostly I've been saying it to stories on TV about Richard Mourdock.  You have to see the movie to appreciate the line.  Bryan Cranston was great, and John Goodman and Alan Arkin were funny, but Ben Affleck, whom I didn't used to like all that much, was spectacular, both as a director and as an actor.  He's two for two in my book after having seen his last hit, The Town.

I might knit a bit.  My finger--thanks to liberal use of Arnica--is feeling much better.  Arnica is a miracle healing herb to me that's been effective for strains, sprains and bruises.  I credit the herb for restoring my ability to knit.  There are only a dozen more rows to go on the Icelandic sweater.  Quite frankly, it's really pretty so I'm excited to be closing in on the end of this project.

I'd like to say I'm sorry to my east coast friends.  Frankensandy looks frightening, to say the least.  While I'm grateful to the storm for the reprieve from all things political in the news, it shouldn't be at the expense of people who live up and down the eastern seaboard.  One of the most riveting books I've ever read was Sebastian Junger's, The Perfect Storm.  It looks like Sandy is trying to one up that storm and I hope it isn't as bad as all that.  Stay safe, my friends, and if you're fleeing your coastal homes, don't forget to pack the knitting!

ETA... you may notice I've not mentioned the Detroit Tigers.  I have a good reason for that and if I were in therapy right now, I know my therapist would recommend that I just avoid all discussion about those losses suffered at the hands of Giants.  I have not abandoned hope.  Game 3 is tomorrow.

I really want to see Argo. Everyone that has seen it so far says it's really good.

I'm glad you're able to knit now to help keep your mind off of other unmentionable things :)

BTW - re: Linda wanting to see our political ads. I gather that Canadian politics is really awful right now too - maybe she wouldn't think our ads are that bad. Nah, who am I kidding?

A salve my masseuse uses is Traumaheal. Probably the same stuff, She swears by it, but I figure maybe it would have felt better anyway, who knows.

Ruth I've given up finding excuses to stay in my 'jamas. If I feel like doing it I just stay in them all day. Just as well I have to pick my granddaughter up from school weekdays or I'd be living in them. It's so comforting especially in winter.

Hadn't seen the news today so didn't hear about hurricane Sandy. Florida got a bit of a bashing in August from Isaac. Our weather is awful but thankfully nothing on that scale. Hope it veers away soon.

I always like herbal medicine and if possible try to use it. Not to be confused with homeopathic medicine like some people do. I am glad that you are able to knit again and try not to worry too much about sports and politics. They can cause a lot of innecessary stress :)

Argo looks like a good movie. Glad to hear you thought so too. I think someone else told me about Arnica. I can relate to not wanting to talk about playing against the Giants. The Tigers still have a chance though. Enjoy your days off!

Oh so sorry to see the Tigers lose two in a row. But you're right...it's early. I've never heard of Arnica but I'm going to look into it. My index finger has been a bit stiff lately. That really messes up my knitting.

I'm hoping my home comes through the storm well. I am avoiding calling my neighbor, since he is probably battening down the hatches on my place and his.

Glad the finger is better, and great to know you got the long weekend. After the way they ran you last week, you deserve it.

I'm glad I stumbled on your blog post. I've been knitting/crocheting a lot in the last several weeks and my left wrist is sore. I'm going to look for arnica to help it. Enjoy your 4 day weekend. ;-)

A 4 day weekend! How great is that? I hope you get lots of jammie time - the best clothes ever invented! They are especially good for knitting :) Never heard of Amica - thanks for the tip.

Just forget about politics and baseball for a while.

Glad to hear Argo is a good movie. I've heard a lot of good about it, but on TV and since I never know if the parent company of the talk show is related to the movie, I don't really hold much value in their praise. Cynical, eh? And this isn't even politics! lol!

Oh, Rudee. It's not looking too good for the Tigers. Work some magic if you can.

Argo is good entertainment but untrue. Google Ken Taylor, Canadian Ambassador in Tehran at the time. He played the largest role in getting them out with phony Canadian passports. What is it with Hollywood and truth.
I'm in pj's too, too much traveling has left me weary and with a bladder infection, yuck. I hope you enjoyed your weekend...ciao
