Some days I find myself traveling to some of the worst zip codes in the city of Detroit. There are many nights when I'm gone for hours and most nights, not a soul in the world knows where I'm located. I don't think too much about it anymore, unless I know the house already and expect at least a little trouble. If that's the case, I tell at least one person where I'm heading-usually my east side colleague.
Tonight I left the house at 11:15 PM-for the only kind of call that gets a hospice nurse out that late at night. An hour and a half later, as I was driving home, the phone rang. It was my son checking on me before he went to bed.
Isn't that supposed to be the other way around?

There always seems to be a stage when the roles are reversed. It's great that he was thinking of you
Oh, that is so lovely, Rudee . . . sounds like you've raised a lovely son. Enjoy the care and attention. You richly deserve it.
I still want to hear how you got into hospice work.
If you're going out to all those scary zip codes, you must be escorted by angels! Sure hope so.
Be careful out there.
And thanks for the service you're providing. One day I know I'll need someone like you to come see me at some late hour. I'm glad to know you're out there!
I'm glad your son is calling to check on you, Rudee. God bless you and keep you safe. It takes someone very special to do what you do.
Have a great weekend!
I worry about you and my daughter who go to home visits like this. She never goes at night though. Any chance you could get day hours? Great son you have there Rudee!
These are sweetnesses, aren't they.
Okay, now I'm going to worry about you. But it is some comfort to know that you have such a thoughtful, protective son.
Be careful. I'm picturing you surrounded in white light and grace. It's a good thing that you do.
Miss-it's a bit strange to have him checking on me.
Kathleen-I listened to the call. I can only hope that angels have my back. Interestingly, the only place I've ever felt threatened was in a very well-to-do neighborhood.
Renie-I am blessed to have a good son.
Brenda-it's no different during the day. Now that summer is here, at least it's light for so long.
Debra-Yes. They are.
Pyzahn-don't worry. It's not bad. Usually.
I remember the tv ads, "do you know where your kids are" very well. I always did. I used to worry when he was traveling around the world though and I didn't hear from him for a couple of days. Now, like with you, my offspring calls me if he hasn't heard from me in a couple of days to see if I'm okay. The role reversal is kind of weird for me but also kind of nice...ciao
It is nice, Rositta. I won't worry that I worry him then. I'll just accept it as a natural turn of the tables.
What a sweetheart. I would worry about you too, but I am sure as Kathleen said surely angels are with you.
Hi Rudee! Add me to the list of ones who will be thinking of you going out late at night! I give you so much credit for the job you do.
You do have a wonderful son who obviously cares deeply for his mama's safety & whereabouts!
Nice to read you again!
What a sweetheart! Me? When I'm going to a scary place at night? I take my dog...people don't know he's an absolute darling, but he can look scary as hell. I've had a knife pulled on me once...that was nice. NOT.. And I had to go back in to the home (!!) but "only if other family members were present", per orders of my boss. Oh yes I did, and it freaked me out big time. ONce a dog bit me.. Scary times. I think if hospice/home health nurses all got together to tell their stories, we'd have something resembling the size of Encyclopedia Britannica!
Your son may be a good boy, but he only calls...The husband, I hear, gets in his car and plows you out of a snow bank...and escorts you into the hood..god bless that man!
Sounds like a hard week. I love your new blog
What a lovely son you have.
Yes as we get older the roles reverse. Take care Rudee.
